FIBA World Rankings

The FIBA World Rankings are FIBA's rankings of national basketball teams. Sponsored by bwin, FIBA ranks men's and women's national teams in both senior and junior competitions. It also publishes combined rankings for all competitions in both genders.

Contents

Not included are ranking for 3x3, which is by individual player.

Calculation

Only FIBA tournaments for full five-a-side teams are used in calculations for the tournaments. Other tournaments, such as regional championships, invitationals, and friendlies are not included. Also not counted are tournaments in FIBA's official competition for three-on-three halfcourt basketball, 3x3.

Events' weights

Each FIBA event has a weight, partly based on the strength of the various national teams participating:

Competition ranking points

As opposed to football tournaments, teams still have to go through a series of consolation and classification rounds even if they've been eliminated from title contention, so that a complete ranking of the teams will be possible.

Cycle and updates

The calculations are done after the tournaments stated above in a group of two Olympic cycles (8 years). The oldest tournament outside the 8-year period is discarded and replaced with the newest competition.

This means that in every computation, there are:

  • Four continental championships
  • Two FIBA Basketball World Cups
  • Two Olympic basketball tournaments
  • Example

The United States' 1000.0 points were calculated by this method:

Iran's 93.2 points were calculated by this method:

After the conclusion of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, the points gained from the 2006 World Championship were replaced with those gained from the 2014 World Cup.
