Given the success of Evoland, Shiro Games decided to create the sequel with more play-time, new characters, new bosses and monsters, new play styles, and a new card minigame. This version was released on PC in 2015. The game was released onto OS X about four months later. A Linux version is planned.

Gameplay

Evoland 2 is the sequel and spiritual successor to the original Evoland, with its graphics style similarly changing as the player travels through time and its varied gameplay styles being revealed as the player moves along the storyline. The scenario is based on time travel and different gameplay styles that are linked to the story and the player’s actions. These gameplay styles pay homage to older games from which the developers got inspiration. The game also features a stronger narrative than the first.

The story of Evoland 2 takes players through four different time periods, each with its own historical setting and graphical art style that match up with Game Boy graphics, 8-bit graphics, 16-bit graphics and 3D graphics. The player controls a character named Kuro, who befriends a girl named Fina. The two travel together and meet different characters with the ultimate goal of determining the fate of the world. The story takes place during a war between the Empire and the Demons of Demonia. By jumping through time, players can change consequences in the future to alter the world.

The majority of the game's fighting system revolves around real-time fighting and turn-based battles; outside of battle, the character is usually guided through a top-down angle. In addition to completing the story mode, players can also attempt to find hidden collectible stars, cards, and other items like Maana or Orikon Ore that are scattered around the game world.

Additionally, there is a minigame involving cards that one can play as a sidequest.

Reception

The game was received by critics with an average grade of 74 out of 100 on Metacritic. Reviews have praised the game for extending the amount of game-time and for including so many references to previous video games. One review states "Evoland 2 came up with a good way of integrating its graphical changes into the narrative, and succeeds at being a full-fledged game that shifts between the eras of RPGs." However, some have also criticized that the game relies too much on nostalgia.

Evoland 2 was awarded the Innovation Award at 2015’s European Indie Game Days.
