Sheen attended the College of the Holy Cross where he played four years of NCAA Division I hockey with the Holy Cross Crusaders of the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA). In his freshman season he was recognized for his outstanding play when he was named to the 2007–08 AHA All-Rookie Team.

On August 2, 2011, the Reading Royals of the ECHL signed Sheen to begin his professional career with the 2011–12 season.

On June 15, 2015, Sheen left the newly defunct Ontario Reign after four seasons, and signed a one-year contract with Edinburgh Capitals of the Elite Ice Hockey League. In his first season abroad, Sheen was announced as the Capitals captain to begin the 2015–16 season. He adapted quickly to open the season scoring 9 points in 13 games before suddenly leaving the team to return to North America on October 14, 2015. Over a week later, Sheen signed a contract to return to the ECHL with the Colorado Eagles on October 23, 2015.

Following a five-year professional career, Sheen opted to end his playing day in accepting an assistant coaching position with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL on September 1, 2016.
