European Pétanque Championships are organised by the C.E.P. - "Confédération Européenne de Pétanque" - (European Pétanque Confederation) in collaboration with Europeans Member Countries Federations.

Nowadays categories for Euroropean Pétanque Championships are, in order of creation:

  1. Youth (under 18 years old) :
  2. Open Triple Game Championships, teams of 4 players.
  3. Precision Shooting Championships, one player.
  4. Held in even numbered years
  5. Accounted for Selection to World Championships
  6. Women (Senior) :
  7. Triple Game Championships, teams of 4 players.
  8. Precision Shooting Championships, one player.
  9. Held in even numbered years (same time as Youth Championships)
  10. Accounted for Selection to World Championships
  11. Espoirs U23 (under 23 years old) :
  12. Young Women Team Championships / Games combination by encounter: 1x Triple game + (1 Double game and 1 Single game played simultaneously ) - teams of 4 players.
  13. Young Men Team Championships / Games combination by encounter: 1x Triple game + (1 Double game and 1 Single game played simultaneously ) - teams of 4 players.
  14. Held in odd numbered years (same time as Youth Championships)
  15. Men (Senior) :
  16. Triple Game Championships, teams of 4 players.
  17. Precision Shooting Championships, one player.
  18. Single Game (since 2016)
  19. Held in odd numbered years
  20. Accounted for Selection to World Championships
  21. Veteran ( over 60 years old ) :
  22. Triple Game Championships.
  23. Held in even numbered years

History

  • 1990s - the idea for a new competition for Youth and Women Europeans players is discussed first by the German and Danish Federations
  • 1998 - France, supporting the idea invite teams for a first event in Dijon, France.
  • 1999 - Foundation of C.E.P. in Strasbourg, France
  • 2000 - 1st Official European Championship for Juniors in Liège, Belgium supported by the Belgian Federation
  • 2001 - 1st European Championship for Women in Strasbourg, France.
  • 2005/2007 - discussion of the need to create an Espoirs category for young players over 18 but not yet ready for "Open Championships" to build up more competitive experience
  • 2008 - 1st European Championship for Espoirs in St-Jean-D'Angely, France.
  • 2009 - Final but not least, 1st European Championship for Men in Nice, France.
  • 2015 : France wins its 4th Title in MEN Triple and remain unbeaten in this competition yet.
  • 2016 : New Championship Category created : Single Men & Women
  • WOMEN

    held in the even numbered years to decide the European Women's Triples Champions

    Single (Tête à tête)

    ESPOIR (Under 23 years old)

    Women / Men : combination of Triple (Triplette) + simultaneous Double (Doublette) and Single (Tête-à-Tête) games

    MEN

    held in the odd numbered years to decide the European Mens Triples Champion and the best 24 Nations to represent Europe at the FIPJP Pétanque World Championship
