It is the first football (soccer) stadium in the nation. The stadium was renovated in 2002 and expanded in 2003.
Numerous national finals took place at the stadium, the recent was the second match in 2016.
Some continental soccer competition was played at the stadium including the 2014 CAF Champions League, as Sporting Praia Cruz withdrew, the 2016 edition did not play.
