At the time he was first called up to the England squad in 2016, Genge had only been playing in the front row for three years, having played most of his teen rugby as a No 8 before being moved from the back row while at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire.

In May 2016, he received his first call up to the England squad after only 1 start for Leicester Tigers. He came on after 66 minutes in a win against Wales.

After missing out on selection for the 2016 Autumn Internationals, he was recalled to the England squad in January 2017 for the 2017 Six Nations. He is known for his very powerful ball-carrying skills and work-rate though his scrummaging skill is considered less than that of England international rivals Joe Marler, Matt Mullan, and Mako Vunipola which has so far limited him to a single international cap.
