Parentage

Elizabeth was the daughter of Ulrich II, Count of Celje by his wife, Catherine Branković. Her father was a Prince of the Holy Roman Empire who also held domains in the Kingdom of Hungary. Through her mother, Elizabeth was a granddaughter of Đurađ Branković, Despot of Serbia.

Betrothal

Elizabeth's father and grandfather were long-time opponents of John Hunyadi who was elected Regent of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1446.
