In 1959 President Dwight D. Eisenhower visited eleven countries on three continents in order to strengthen the ties binding the nations of the Free World. President Eisenhower felt "there is no substitute for personal contact in furthering understanding and good will." The tour spanned 22,000 miles and twenty days from December 3 to December 22, 1959. In each nation the president visited with heads of state, toured points of interest and was honored with elaborate formal receptions.
