The Elephant Pepper Development Trust is a non-profit educational organization aimed at resolving human-wildlife conflict in rural areas of Africa. Established in Zimbabwe in November 1997, the organization utilizes research, education, and dissemination of community-based problem animal control methods that are safe, low-cost, and effective.
Premise
The basic concept behind the EPDT is that by teaching African farmers to grow chili peppers as a barrier crop, it provides them with a defense against elephants foraging on their crops, in addition to providing additional revenue through the sale of the peppers and hot sauces produced from them.
