Following Armenia's 25 January 1999 earthquake, the terminal had to be rebuilt after major seismic activity caused much of the building to collapse. During 2008/2009, the airport's runway was extended, the control tower's height was increased, and the terminal building was partly upgraded to include a new international gate and immigration area. The airport is now capable of receiving aircraft such as: Boeing 737 and 727, Airbus 319 and 320, McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and Fokker 100, among others.
The new terminal has one food court, three domestic gates, one international gate, and two parking lots. It is located about 20 minutes from Armenia.
The first international flight, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida operated by Spirit Airlines, landed at Armenia International Airport on 13 November 2009. There are currently two weekly flights to Hollywood International Airport.
Runway 02 has a 180 metres (590 ft) displaced threshold. The Armenia non-directional beacon (Ident: AXM) and VOR-DME (Ident: AXM) are located on the field.
