Overview

El Adde is located in southwestern Somalia in the heart of the Gedo region, and is one of the most populated cities in the province, with an estimated population of around 35,000. Residents are mainly of the Reer Garaad sub-clan of the Marehan. El Adde is also the latest district added to the Gedo region.

Battle of El Adde

On 15 January 2016, Al-Shabaab militants attacked a Kenyan military base in El Adde, killing 141–185 soldiers.

Education

El Adde offers scholastic instruction from primary to secondary school. Many El Adde secondary graduates go on to teach in other academic institutions in Gedo. El-Adde Secondary School is a prestigious school in the central and southern regions of Somalia in terms of the quality of education. In addition to primary traditional education (through Primary & Secondary) El-Adde has a Technical Vocational College that provides both higher education and TEVIT classes.

Health

The town has a general hospital, which is mainly overseen by the regional diaspora community.

Transportation

Public transportation is available through buses and taxis. Taxis are mainly minibuses that can seat at least twelve people, and small sedans imported from Japan. Two people are responsible for each taxi, the driver and a kirishboy (Garage boy in English) who collects fares and calls out the taxi's destination.

Community

Established in 2008 in Nairobi, Kenya, the El Adde Youth Union serves the local youth. It is led by Hisham Ibrahim Abdullahi (XIISH) (President) and Abdiraxman Ali Mohamed (Vice President).

Action for Relief & Development (ARD) was also founded in 2008, by a group of professionals led by Mr. Mohamoud Hassan Elmi to provide humanitarian and development services to the public. With the support of the diaspora and international partners, ARD has developed health, Water and Education infrastructure and quality services.
