History

In 1879, the locals wrote an open letter to the government, concerning an establishment of their own municipality. Reasons for this being, that Eiði was the most populous area of Eysturoy at that time.

The geographical location of the village also played a part in the decision, given that it was strenuous for tax collectors, to travel back and forth due to the relatively long distances. At this time, the whole of Eysturoy was one municipality. From the time of the letter, Eiðis Kommuna was a de facto independent municipality.

Eiðis kommuna was officially established in 1894. At that time, Eiðis Kommuna included the villages of Norðskáli and Oyri. These villages are now members of Sunda Kommuna

The first council meeting was held on the 1. of October of that year.

At the meeting, 5 members were elected into the first Municipal council of Eiðis Kommuna.

Gregers Joensen and Jens Jørgen Kruse were elected municipal chairman and vice-chairman respectively.

Johan Nysted and Hanus Joensen were made responsible for collecting taxes.

Joensen collected taxes for Eiði and Ljósá while Nysted Collected the taxes for Svínáir, Norðskáli and Oyri

Jesar Abrahamsen was made responsible for local infrastructure.

Population

Given the geographical Location of Eiði and the availability of resources in the surrounding area, the municipality has always been one of the largest in Eystruroy.

Historically, the village of Eiði was a major fishing port for the Faroe Islands. Especially in the 18th 19th centuries.

In 2003, the population was at its highest. 723 people lived in the municipality at that time.

in 2013 the municipality hit a population low point. In that year, there were 666 inhabitants in Eiðis Kommuna.

After the most recent municipal election, the population increased from 666 in 2013 to 702 in 2016.
