Edward Stanley (cricketer) Edward Stanley 15th Earl of Derby Wikipedia

Edward Stanley (29 June 1852 – 7 April 1896) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Somerset in 1884. He was born at Wincanton, Somerset and died at Accra, Ghana.

Stanley's single appearance for Somerset in the match against Lancashire in August 1884 is not clear. The report of the first day's play in the match in The Times of 29 August records "Mr W. H. Fowler" as "absent" in Somerset's first innings, with no mention of Stanley. In the report of the second (and final) day's play on 30 August, there is no mention of Fowler and "Capt. E. E. Stanley (emergency)" is credited as having been absent in the first innings and, batting at No 11 in the second innings, scoring 0 as Somerset subsided to a 10-wicket defeat. The authoritative CricketArchive website has Stanley as "absent hurt" in Somerset's first innings.
