History

In 2003, social entrepreneur Scott Morgan founded Education Pioneers to meet the need for multi-disciplinary talent in urban education leadership and to provide emerging leaders with an entry point into rewarding education leadership careers.

Education Pioneers began with the summer Graduate School Fellowship, serving eight Partner organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2004. Since its inception, Education Pioneers has grown into a national organization operating in sixteen major cities and metropolitan areas, with offices in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York Metro Area, Chicago, Greater Boston Area, DC Metro Area, Houston, New Orleans, and Tennessee.

Program Areas

Education Pioneers operates two programs: the Graduate School Fellowship, which has 10-week (summer) and yearlong placements, and the Analyst Fellowship, which has 10-month placements. Through these two Fellowships, Education Pioneers’ Fellows impact education through consulting work, receive professional development, and launch careers across the sector. Upon successful completion of their Fellowships, Fellows become a part of Education Pioneers’ nationwide network and receive ongoing programming, career support, and leadership training. More than 70% of Education Pioneers’ employed Alumni work full -time in education.

Graduate School Fellowship

Education Pioneers’ flagship program, the Graduate School Fellowship, attracts graduate students and graduates from business, law, policy, and education programs for a summer or yearlong Fellowship with an education organization. Fellows combine their professional experiences and skills with the knowledge they have gained in graduate school to lend consulting support to education organizations. In addition, Education Pioneers trains Fellows on education issues and leadership practices, and connects them to a network of education leaders and professionals.

Analyst Fellowship

The Analyst Fellowship is a 10-month leadership development program for early-career, trained business analysts to step into the education sector to help improve data use and expertise in education organizations. Analyst Fellows support education organizations in ways such as developing long-term growth strategies, gathering and analyzing performance data, and conducting financial analysis. Education Pioneers supplements the work experiences of its Analyst Fellows with leadership training, workshops focused on key education issues, and access to a network of leaders in the education sector.

Another similar program, The Broad Residency in Urban Education, places participants into full-time roles in public school systems as well as federal and state departments of education, whereas Education Pioneers offers shorter-term Fellowship programs with the aim of catalyzing long-term careers in education.
