Duysevi Mirza Karan Miyar "Sevi" is an Educator, Author, Educational Leader, and Advocate from Istanbul, Turkey. Attended high school at the American School of Kuwait. Holds a bachelor's degree in Education from Istanbul University. She is a doctoral student in the Educational Technology program at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida. Currently a public school teacher in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. Candidate of District 4 of the School Board of Miami Dade County, Miami, Florida. During 2003 - 2006 she was a teacher at the Bob Graham Education Center. Thereafter, she served as a Curriculum Development and Support Specialist at the Division of Bilingual Education in Miami Dade County Public Schools District, and currently holds the position of High School Language Arts Teacher for the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) or (ESOL) department, and as the Educational Excellence School Advisor Committee (EESAC) Chairperson at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School. 2014 - Miami-Dade County, School Board, District 4 Campaign
Duysevi Mirza Karan Miyar was the running opponent of Perla Tabares Hantman, who has been in the seat representing district 4 since 1996. Elections were on August 26, 2014. Mrs. Miyar ran on the notion that Miami-Dade County Public Schools needs education reform and to especially help students succeed in the state mandated tests known in the State of Florida as the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Another notion in her campaign was to bring alertness to the changes needed to compete with other districts in the nation such as, New York City Department of Education, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Chicago Public Schools. Miyar lost the election with only 18% of the vote to Perla Tabaras Hantman's 81%.
Miyar, said she is a veteran English teacher who came to South Florida from Turkey. She said she wants to bring an educator’s perspective to the school board. “It’s time for teachers to make a difference,” she said.
