Background

The school was named after the old colonial village of Dutch Neck, which was founded in the 17th century, in the same county.

Dutch Neck Elementary was built in a colonial style, and was established in the 1930s. There is one large, central building but no peripheries to it. It has not been expanded much afterwards, although there are some plans under way to add new sections.

Awards and recognition

In 2001, Dutch Neck Elementary School was ranked within the top 100 elementary schools in New Jersey Monthly Magazine. It also earned Star School recognition for Best Practices in Mathematics and has been recognized by Red Book Magazine as one of America's Best Schools. The school has a higher-than-average test score mean than other schools outside the district.

Classes

Dutch Neck Elementary school has the same curriculum as the rest of the lower elementary schools of the district, and is compliant to all new education standards in the United States.

The school serves the students (grades 1-3) from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 to 15:15. There are 8 periods, including a separate period for lunchtime for each grade. The subject materials are physical education, mathematics (mostly arithmetic; only 1 division, although if specially qualified an advanced program is available for 3rd grade), art, music, social studies, science, health at intermittent times taught by the school nurse, writing, reading, and for 2nd and 3rd grades, there is a scheduled time for borrowing books at the school's library.

There also are special education services and classes.

For Kindergarten students, there are two sessions, the morning and afternoon classes. The morning session lasts from 9:00 to 11:30, while the afternoon session lasts 12:45 to 15:15.
