Drukgyel Higher Secondary School (DHSS) was inaugurated by British High Commissioner for India, Sir Nicholas Fenn and Education Director of Bhutan Thinley Gyamtsho in 1994. Aum Namgay Om became the first principal of the school. Since its inception, Students across Bhutan came to study in DHSS. Nowadays, it is considered to be one of the academically best performing schools in the country. DHSS has been consistently performing good and therefore, ranked in the top ten schools in the country over many years.

Location

DHSS is located far from the hustle and bustle of town life. The school falls under Tsento Gewog (Upper Paro valley). It is located at a distance of 22 km north of Paro International Airport. It is an access point to very important places in Paro. It lies just on the base of Taktsang Monastery (Tigers nest), which is a cliff hanging monastery about 900 meter uphill.DHSS lies halfway between the two famous resorts in Bhutan, Aman Kora Resort to the north and Zhiwaling Resort to the south. The school enjoys scenic natural beauty and fresh mountain air. It lies at an altitude of about 2511 m above sea level and within 27029’05.6” North Latitude and 89019’56.6” East Longitude.

School campus

DHSS is quiet place, thereby enabling the students to concentratrate their studies. The school gate is in the northern end which then leads downhill by a narrow well paved road. The classrooms are located in the northern end near the school gate. Whereas, student dorms are found way below in the southern stretch where the gradient is relatively flat. DHSS shares its campus with the first hearing-impaired students in Bhutan. This disabled school is mainly financed by the German NGO Star hours – We help children, the humanitarian association of the Bavarian Television, Munich. The school has an old multi-purpose hall and a football pitch right below it. The school campus is near to a local Basic health unit center.

Education and co-curricular activities

DHSS is a center of Academic excellence. The school has been a top ranking school in Bhutan ever since its inception. The Teaching faculty consist of both Bhutanese and Non-Bhutanese (Indians) experienced teachers. DHSS embeds students with all round qualities. There are various co-curricular activities which can help students become a better person. Students enjoy playing games and sports during free time. Also, they get to showcase their talents through cultural shows and dance competitions. However, students are also taught on agricultural programmes to impart basic knowledge, skills and techniques on different aspects of farming (growing common vegetables. A group of 33 students from Drukgyel High School visited the National Soil Service Centre on 25 September 2013 to learn more about soils, its importance and sustainable management.

Notable alumni

Bhutan's renowned actor Tandin Sonam passed his high school from DHSS. He made his debut in Bhutanese film industry with style. His first film Sleeping Beauty was a sensation. The movie was played by him as a debutant actor, who is the protagonist, who believes that he will meet his dream girl one day. Since then, he has been a young superstar and an idol to many young Bhutanese. His talent can also be seen in singing. He sang songs like "chued chued bumo" and " Yasi mey" which is loved by many young Bhutanese. Just like him young Actress Tandin Bhida also was a student of DHSS. She is one of the most talented actress in Bhutanese film industry. At just 22 years she was nominated for national film awards for supporting actress.
