Driving license in Indonesia

Indonesian Driving License or Surat Izin Mengemudi (SIM) is a legal document required in Indonesia before they are allowed to drive a motor vehicle. The Indonesian driving license is issued by the Indonesian National Police (Polri). The general requirements for a license in Indonesia are to be at least 17 years old (for A-class; different age requirement exist for each class), pass the theory test, and pass the practical test.

Requirements for Indonesian Driving License

Indonesian Driving License (SIM) individual applicant requirements under Indonesia's Article 81 paragraph (2), (3), (4), and (5) of Law no. 22 of 2009 (Pasal 81 ayat (2), (3), (4), dan (5) UU No. 22 Tahun 2009)

  1. Age
  2. 17 years old for issue of Driving License class: A, C, and D
  3. 20 years old for issue of Driving License class: B1
  4. 21 years old for issue of Driving License class: B2
  5. Administration
  6. Owning legal identification ID card or KTP (Kartu Tanda Penduduk)
  7. Fill in application form
  8. Finger Print
  9. Health
  10. Having good health and physical condition according from doctor's check up form
  11. Physically and mentally healthy as well as passing the psychological test
  12. Test and Examination
  13. Theory Exam
  14. Practical Exam or Examination of driving simulator skills

Additional conditions pursuant to Article 81 paragraph (6) Law. 22 of 2009 (Pasal 81 ayat (6) UU No. 22 Tahun 2009) for any motor vehicle driver who will apply:

  • Driving License class B1, have to own Driving License class A at least 12 months, and those who would also apply:
  • Driving License class B2, have to own Driving License class B1 at least 12 months
  • Driving License class B3, have to own Driving License class B1 at least 12 months
  • Classes

  • A – to drive a normal private passenger car or cargo vehicle with weight allowed not exceeding 3,500 kg
  • A Public (A UMUM) - to drive public vehicles and goods carrier to the amount of weight that is allowed does not exceed 3,500 kg
  • B1 – to drive private passenger or cargo vehicle with weight allowed exceeding 3,500 kg
  • B1 Public (B1 UMUM) - to drive passenger vehicles and general freight allowed amount of weight over 3,500 kg
  • B2 - to drive heavy equipment vehicles, towing vehicles, or motor vehicles with attractive patch or trailer train individuals with severe or patches are allowed to train more than 1,000 kg trailer/s
  • B2 Public (B2 UMUM) - to drive vehicles for towing or pull cart trailer with heavy patch that are allowed to train more than 1,000 kg trailer
  • C – to drive motorcycles (two-wheeled motor vehicle)
  • D – special vehicle for disabled person

    CRIMINAL PROVISIONS
  • ONE. Driving a motor vehicle failing to show the legal Driving License to officials are sentenced confinement for 2 months or fine maximal Rp. 2.000.000. According to Article 59 paragraph (1) of Law no. 14 1992 (Pasal 59 Ayat (1) UU No. 14 tahun 1992)
  • TWO. Driving a motor vehicle not owning legal driving license are sentenced confinement for 6 months or fine maximal Rp. 6.000.000. According to Article 59 paragraph (2) of Law no. 14 1992 (Pasal 59 Ayat (2) UU No. 14 tahun 1992)
  • THREE. Driving License will be revoked at least 1 year according to Article 70 paragraph (1) of Law no. 14 1992 (pasal 70 ayat (1) UU No. 14 tahun 1992 ) if:
    1. . Violating Article 23 paragraph (1) letter a, letter b, article 24 paragraph (1) letter a, article 27 paragraph (1) of Law no. 14 1992 (pasal 23 ayat (1) huruf a, huruf b, pasal 24 ayat (1) huruf a, pasal 27 ayat (1) UU No. 14 tahun 1992)
    2. . Committing Crime using motor vehicle that is referred to Article 359, 360, 406, 408, 409, 410, and 492 KUHP (KUHP is Indonesia Legal Book of Criminal Law)
  • FOUR. Driving License may be revoked at least 2 years if violation referred to no. 3 is committed/done again within a period of 1 year since the date of the court decision of the violation before has been strongly referred to law of Article 70 paragraph (2) of Law no. 14 1992 (pasal 70 ayat (2) UU No. 14 tahun 1992 )
  • Note: The rear side of the Indonesian Driving License Card may differ according to the year, location, and class of the issued driving license card. Not all of the rear side of the driving license in Indonesia is the same.
  • International driving permit

    Indonesia is not party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, but the International Driving Permit (IDP) is honored. Issued by the Indonesian National Police (POLRI).
