Cumberland was drafted in the supplemental first round (46th overall) of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Diego Padres. He was chosen to represent the United States in the 2010 All-Star Futures Game.

After a good start to his career, Cumberland missed the entire 2011 season with concussion symptoms. After considering retirement, Cumberland received permission to continue playing from doctors, and planned to make a comeback in the 2012 season. The Padres did not protect him on their 40-man roster prior to the 2011 Rule 5 draft, but he was not chosen in the draft.

After attempting to resume his playing career, he was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called bilateral vestibulopathy, in which the portions of both inner ears that control balance are damaged. Due to this, Cumberland was forced to announce his retirement at the age of 22.
