History
The interchange was designed by local transport executive South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and shopping centre owners Teesland. It had received planning permission by 2001, and was intended to open in 2004 at a cost of £70 million.
Work on the Frenchgate interchange began in 2003. It opened in June 2006 and became the town's main transport hub, with SYPTE predicting that it would receive around 12 million passengers per year. The previous Doncaster North and Doncaster South bus stations, which dated from the 1960s and were located underneath multi-storey car parks, were closed.
Bus
The Interchange is used by all bus companies that serve Doncaster. First South Yorkshire is the town's largest and central bus operator, with Stagecoach Yorkshire, Arriva Yorkshire, Wilfreda Beehive and Powells Bus Co. serving outer destinations.
Services to Robin Hood Airport in Finningley also operate from the Interchange. With effect from September 2010 the dedicated direct Airport service was withdrawn, and replaced with frequent local services.
Train
Doncaster railway station is situated on the East Coast Main Line. There are currently seven train operators that call at Doncaster, including Virgin Trains East Coast, TransPennine Express and Northern.
