This peak was named for Diego de Ocampo, a son of a wealthy Spaniard whose mother was of taino race from the island of Hispanola. He was named a true heir to his father in the Spanish courts. Diego de Ocampo rebelled, pillaged and sabotaged plantations in ConcepciĆ³n de la Vega, San Juan de la Maguana, Azua de Compostela and Bahoruco. He made a truce with the Spanish authorities, but rebelled again soon after. Later on he was captured and executed by Spanish troops, according to Governor Cerrato and the Oidor Grajeada in 1546.
