Die Wolke (The Cloud) is a novel by German author Gudrun Pausewang, published in German in 1987.

Contents

The story was published after the Chernobyl disaster of 1986 when nuclear fallout fell on much of Europe. Sales of the book surged in 2011 in response to the nuclear disaster in Japan.

Plot

The story deals with a Chernobyl-type nuclear disaster happening on German soil. The heroine of the story is a fourteen-year-old girl who flees the contaminating cloud of radiation and experiences the ensuing breakdown of social order.

Adaptations

Die Wolke was translated into English by Patricia Crampton and published in 1997 as Fall-Out.

A film adaptation, The Cloud, was made in 2006.

In 2014, a stage adaptation titled Mienai Kumo (Invisible Clouds) was written by Misaki Setoyama.
