Taylor played as a centreman, and made his VFL debut in 1922 with Melbourne. He was a member of their 1926 premiership side and represented Victoria at interstate football during his time at Melbourne. In 1927 he finished equal second behind Syd Coventry in the Brownlow Medal count.

He moved to North Melbourne in 1932 where he was given the captaincy. His role was expanded to captain-coach in 1933, having coached the club for part of 1932.
