Background

On July 21, 1983 Diana Ross's concert in Central Park (on the Great Lawn) attended by 800,000 fans, was cut short by a large storm. It ranks as one of the largest attended Central Park concerts, bested only by Garth Brooks, a couple of decades later.

The concert was attended by an atypical Diana Ross audience. Since her early days as lead singer of The Supremes, Diana appealed to a very mainstream, very Anglo audience. However, her audience at both concerts was heavily black and Hispanic. Ross seemed to intuitively expected a different type of audience as the production values included Afro-centric themes. Ross' concerts were usually high priced tickets. This was an opportunity to appeal to a wider demographic. Musically, the arrangements leaned more soulful.

There was a downside because the rained out first day experienced rowdiness at the end. That said, Diana delivered a great performance.(The next day, July 22, 1983 she played again, but this time with only 400,000 fans in attendance. That was arguably over 1 million fans.
These two concerts were part of the Up Front Tour to promote Ross's 1983 album.

TV Land awarded Most Memorable Television Performance in 2006, ABC Network chose it as one of the Top 20 Television Performances and VH1's 100 Greatest Moments on TV!
