Dholan Majra is a small village located near the city of Morinda, in the Ropar District (Rupnagar) of East Punjab, India.

The village was established in the late 19th century.

History

The village was established by Sikhs, but settled by other groups, particularly the Bassi clan of Jatt Sikh farmers. In the early 20th century, the population numbered roughly 50 people.

Villagers were mainly engaged in agriculture, but by the mid-1950s, settlers from the western part of the Punjab, displaced by the Partition of India, caused the population to expand.

The first village chief, Chuhhar Singh Bassi, was considered a respected person in the British district of Ambala. Later his son Capt. Dr. Harbhans Singh Bassi went on to become the chief of the village, as he was as much as respected like his father by the village and all the surrounding Villages and towns as he was the first M. B. B. S. Doctor in all the nearby towns, he got his M. B. B. S. Degree from Lahore and later served in Indian British army as a doctor and he was a medic in his Indian platoon in war between England and Japan, later when he retired he opened a clinic in a nearby town Morinda which was known as bagganwala that time, he was also the first Indian Congress party leader of district Ambala. And he was well respected by the big guns of Indian Congress party of that time like Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru himself, who was a central figure of Indian politics before and after independence. Dr. Harbhans Singh also had the privilege of discussing politics with Nehru ji himself over a lunch and would often have meetings with him.

Still the leadership of the village is in the Bassi family as the children, Grandchildren and even the Great Grand children of Dr. Harbhans Singh Bassi have kept leading the legacy of their forefathers to greatness by achieving goals in different streams at different occupations and keeps earning respect in the Community by their good deeds IN AND FOR the society

Geography

The village is situated in a fertile, alluvial plain, surrounded by both rivers and an extensive irrigation canal system. The Shiwalik Hills extend along the northeastern part at the foot of the Himalaya mountains. The average elevation is 300m above sea level, ranging from 180m in the southwest to more than 500m around the northeast border.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Indian Census, the population of Dholan Majra is 394. The literacy rate in village is 81%, male literacy being 80.23% and female literacy 78.36%.

Religion

Sikhism is the predominant faith in the village.
