Dhampur is a Megacity and a municipal board in Bijnor district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India.It is located at 29.30°N 78.50°E / 29.30; 78.50, and lies in Northern India.

History

It was a part of Garhwal Kingdom during ancient times.In 1805, Dhampur was sacked by Pindaris.The Indian sugar company Dhampur Sugar Mills first started operations with the established of a sugar mill having a crushing capacity of 300 tonnes of cane per day in 1933.

Demographics

As of the 2001 Census of India, Dhampur had a population of 46,855. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Dhampur has an average literacy rate of 65%: male literacy is 68% and female literacy is 60%. In Dhampur, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

As of the 2011 Census of India Dhampur is a Census Town city in district of Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 1001 which is 11% of total population. The Female Sex Ratio is of 893 against state average of 912. Moreover, Child Sex Ratio is around 918 compared to Uttar Pradesh state average of 902. Literacy rate is 87%, higher than state average of 71%. Male literacy is around 89% while female literacy rate is 85%. The town has total administration over 1,166 houses.

Culture

The city enjoys a multicultural nature due to people of all religions and areas are present.The festivals like Independence Day,Diwali,Dussehra,Holi,Eid,Gurupurv and Christmas are celebrated with lot of enthusiasm.The regional festivals like Teej, Lohri, Carnival are celebrated when harvest takes place.Many people are associated with cultivation and agriculture business here.

Language

The local language is Khariboli with Pahari touch to it.Many people speak Hindi,English,Urdu and Punjabi also.

Economy

Dhampur's economy is based on agriculture, mainly sugarcane, wheat, and rice. Hand-woven textile items produced by the weavers living in surrounding areas are known for their utility and designs. The State Government set up a Handloom Intensive Development Project at Dhampur and several production centres are located in the area, with its central office headquartered at Kanpur. One of the largest sugar producers in India, Dhampur Sugar Mills, is located here. Set up in 1933, Dhampur Sugar Mills is a publicly listed sugar manufacturer, which produces the Dhampure brand of sugar products.

It is being developed as a planned smart city.

There are very few entertainment hubs here.They will be developed by the town planners.
