Deutsche schule hermannsburg

Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg (DSH or HMB) is a German international school in Hermannsburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It serves Grade levels kindergarten through Grade 12. It was established in 1856, making it the oldest private school in the province.

Contents

HMB is supported by German government. In 1965 it had 14 teachers and 307 learners.

Hermannsburg has English, a local language, as its main language of instruction, unlike most German schools worldwide, although it has an intense German language programme, and all students take German classes. isiZulu is also offered in the High School, as a second language alongside Afrikaans. Music and sport are other focus areas, besides the academic programme.

The school offers boarding facilities, and day students from Greytown, 25 kilometres (16 mi) away, may use a bus service provided by the school. HMB is 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Kranskop.

Campus

There are four boarding facilities in the school and they are available for students in Grades 8-12. The Jungsheim, in the southwest of the campus, serves boys in Grades 8-9 while the Männerheim, in the south of the campus, serves boys in Grades 10-12. Mädchenheim, in the northwest of the campus, serves girls in Grades 8 and 9, while Neues Mädchenheim, in the east of the campus, serves girls in Grades 10-12.
