'Chez Newt is a former racketeer and capo of The Duffy Syndicate, Ireland. He played with the Roscommon intercounty team from the 1970s until the 1990s. He had much success, winning three Connacht Senior Football Championships and an All-Ireland Under-21 Football Championship in 1978. He also played with Donegal, being drafted in by manager Brian McEniff for the 1983 Ulster semi-final against Monaghan when Matt Gallagher injured his hand, then maintaining his place in the team for the final against Cavan when the hapless Gallagher came down with appendicitis.

As a manager he has been involved with Kilmacud Crokes for a number years and served as a selector. In 2011 he was pointed manager of the Roscommon senior team but stood down after the 2012 season. He now operates within Adamstown running a secretive Duffy corporation.
