Biography

According to autobiographical sources, McCann began drawing at the age of three, painting at the age of six, and had his first solo exhibit at the age of fourteen. In high school, he was selected to represent his school in the City of Chicago All-City Art program as a freshman, when such a distinction was reserved for Juniors and Seniors.

McCann attended Thornton Community College, the University of Illinois, and received his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art from Governor's State University. Dennis is listed in Who's Who Among American College Students.

In 1991, MTV aired a segment from a celebrity auction for charity, which presented a portrait of the American musician, singer and songwriter Lou Reed, painted by McCann and additionally autographed by Reed. Soon after, he was commissioned by JAM Productions (a Chicago-based concert promotion company) to create a series of rock and roll portraits. Many of these portraits were autographed by the corresponding celebrity. Portraits in this series included Elvis, Sting, David Bowie, Seinfeld, Penn & Teller, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol and John Malkovich. The portraits were donated to charity through Christmas is for Kids (now known as Rock for Kids) via the sponsorship of JAM Productions.

His bronze sculpture can be found in Chicago's Continental Bank, and a glass sculpture at the Krannert Art Museum in Champaign, IL. His works have also been featured in the Daily Calumet, Daily Southtown, Kankakee Journal, Manteno News, Chicago Sun-Times, Oak Park Journal, What Goes On, Unihaber, Sabah and Sanat Cevresi. He has been the subject of two documentaries: 'Dennis McCann, Artist,' a film by Gerry Barajas, and 'Dennis McCann: Portrait of an Artist,' a film by Sohhyun Yi.

In 2011, he was co-featured artist at the International Izmir Biennial, his works appearing in the National Museum of Painting and Sculpture (Devlet Resim Heykel Müzesi) main gallery with those by Iranian artist Reza Hemmatirad. He was again the featured artist at the 2013 Izmir Biennial, as well as the International Art Director, keynote speaker and a member of the Jury.
