Debbie Lieberman is a four-term County Commissioner of Montgomery County, Ohio. She was elected as County Commissioner in the 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 elections. Before becoming a county official, she served two terms on the city council of Clayton, Ohio.

Early life

Debbie Lieberman spent parts of her youth in the Dayton region as her father served as headmaster for Dayton Christian School. However, her family also spent years in both Indianapolis, Indiana, and St. Petersburg, Florida. Debbie attended Central Indiana University, now the University of Indianapolis, for her undergraduate degree in Political Science.

She returned to Dayton in 1983 to attend the University of Dayton Law School, graduating in 1986. After completing law school, Debbie worked in real estate and with The Legal Aid Society of Dayton. In 1991, Debbie joined the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office as Director of Real Estate. She served in that position for 10 years before becoming the Chief Deputy Auditor in 2001.

Public Service

In 1998 Debbie was selected to serve on the Randolph Township Planning Commission and helped lead the merger effort ended with the creation of the City of Clayton. That year, Debbie was elected to the first City of Clayton Council. She worked diligently for the citizens of Clayton and to adopt the Clayton Charter in 1999. Debbie was honored to be re-elected to Clayton Council in 2001.

Debbie Lieberman was elected to the Montgomery County Commission in 2004 and won re-election in 2008, 2012, and 2016.

Commissioner Lieberman has participated in many boards throughout her public life, including:

  • Jewish Community Center’s Early Childhood Development Committee
  • Development Committee for the Artemis Center for Alternatives to Domestic Violence
  • Dayton Development Coalition’s Regional Leaders Forum
  • Downtown Dayton Partnership Board
  • Co-chair of the Economic Self Sufficiency Outcome Team
  • Co-chair of the Community Wide Ex-Offender Reentry Task Force
  • Ohio Local Government Innovation Fund Council
  • Ohio Housing Trust Fund Committee
  • Supreme Court Task Force of the Funding of Ohio Courts
  • Gov Strickland’s 21st Century Transportation Task Force
  • Debbie is active in the County Commissioner’s Association of Ohio (CCAO) and is currently serving as President of the Board of Directors.

    Community Service

    In addition to her commitment to public service, Debbie Lieberman is also committed to developing a strong civil society in Montgomery County. To that end, she has worked on numerous projects, including:

  • Chair of the Kids Voting Bipartisan Bash
  • Honorary Co-Chair of the NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet
  • Chair of the “Dayton, A City of Peace Celebration”
  • United Way of Greater Dayton Board Member
  • Dayton Metro Police Athletic League
  • Honorary chair for the Day of Caring that benefits the Montgomery County Housing Coalition and The Food Bank.
  • The Ohio Institute of Allied Health Board of Directors
  • Awards

    Debbie was recognized as a “Woman of Influence” by the Dayton Area YWCA. The award recognizes efforts to eliminate racism and empower women.

    She also received the “Champion for Children” award from Voices for Ohio’s Children where she was recognized for her involvement and advocacy for children’s issues in the community.
