She received her undergraduate education at SUNY Plattsburgh (in Plattsburgh, New York) and began her career there as a news anchor at WPTZ from 1983 to 1985. In 1985, she worked at KFMB-TV as a newscaster and reporter. She joined WCVB-TV in 1986 to hold the same position, but left in 1991 to co-anchor the 6pm edition of News 4 New York with Chuck Scarborough on WNBC until 1993.
Fratangelo was divorced from her first husband in the early 1990s. In 1997, she married Eric Wishnie, a producer for NBC News. By 2006, Fratangelo and Wishnie had separated; he committed suicide in 2007.
