Born in India to Iraqi Jewish refugees of the Farhud, Shamoon grew up in India, where he attended Cathedral School in Mumbai (now the Cathedral & John Connon School) and Iran, where he attended Community School, Tehran). He moved to Canada in 1970 after graduating from Boston University. He successfully worked in advertising for many years before trying his hand at screenwriting, first as a hobby, but eventually as a career after studying the craft and writing several scripts, some of which were optioned.
