In 1998 he worked with Canadian University Press as the Ottawa Bureau Chief. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) took interest in Cochrane while he was writing columns for The Telegram, St. John's daily newspaper. His CBC career began as a summer job and became full-time employment.

He has described his role as a reporter as "part-gossip, part-detective." He has broken a number of stories about political happenings in the province.
