Formation and early years (1998–2002)

Prior to Daughters there was As the Sun Sets, who were an American grindcore band from Providence, Rhode Island, formed in 1998. As the Sun Sets have three studio releases in total. In 1999 As the Sun Sets released their debut album Each Individual Voice Is Dead in the Silence originally through Moment of Clarity Records and later reissued through City of Hell Records. In 2002 As the Sun Sets released their second album 7744, through Undecided Records. Also in 2002 As the Sun Sets released an EP 8949, through Trash Art Records. Contrary to popular belief, the band was broken up long before 8949 was released.

Following the break-up of As the Sun Sets, vocalist Alexis Marshall, guitarist Jeremy Wabiszczewicz and drummer Jon Syverson went on to form Daughters along with guitarist Nicholas Andrew Sadler and bassist Pat Masterson. As the Sun Sets' 8949 contained a front insert which had a message from the band on it. The message stated "8949 This is As The Sun Sets' final recording. March 21st, 2002, the sun set for the last time. March 22nd, 2002, we begin anew as Daughters".

On March 25, 2002 (only three days after the band officially formed) Daughters released their debut EP, Daughters, through City of Hell Records. The album was re-released in 2002 through City of Hell, the re-release was only able to be purchased during the tour of 2002.
Career and break-up (2003–2010)
On July 29, 2003 Daughters released their debut album Canada Songs, through Robotic Empire.

In June, 2004 Daughters released their first live album Live at CBGB, through City of Hell. The album contained a new unheard Daughters song, "Boner X-Ray". In July 2004 "Boner X-Ray" was later released for free as a download from Daughters' website. The song was featured on Daughters at the time upcoming album Hell Songs under the title "X-Ray". On August 8, 2006 Daughters released their second album Hell Songs, through Hydra Head Records.

Recording for Daughters' third album began in late April, 2009. However, in August 2009, Daughters had abruptly broken up. After "the break-up" Sadler continued with mastering the record and hashing out the artwork and he even worked with this artist, Dave Fisher, on a trailer video, in an attempt to keep the band alive. The situation was described by Alexis Marshall as a "big falling out" stemming from creative and personal differences among band members. The disbandment was never officially announced, and "no one outside of [Daughters] knew" about the breakup before the end of 2009. Despite "the break-up", Daughters released their third album Daughters on March 9, 2010 through Hydra Head Records. The band's management announced there would not be any tour in support of the self titled album.
Reunion and upcoming fourth album (2013–present)
On September 13, 2013 Daughters reformed for one show in Rhode Island. Due to popular demand, a second show was added on September 15. Although no further official statements have been made, ever since the reunion the band has had heavy activity in their Facebook page, and have several shows tentatively planned for 2015.

In the summer of 2014 the band started recording for their fourth album at Providence based studio, Machines With Magnets. During these recording sessions the band kept hinting at a new album through Facebook by posting pictures and uploading a video of drummer Jon Syverson playing drums with the description "Demos". However all recordings from this session were shelved because the band were unhappy with the outcome, claiming they forced it and that the recordings ended up sounding unfinished.
On June 6, 2016 it was announced that Daughters were playing live shows again. The positive reception lead to Daughters playing multiple small venues across America through the rest of 2016.
In September, 2016 the band announced via Instagram that they will "Record, once again, during [their upcoming tour] with no real agenda nor timeline for release." On some of their live shows Daughters played a new unheard song, "Long Road - No Turns".
