Club career

Rodriguez has played the majority of his club football for Penarol, and Schalke 04. His other clubs include Sud America and Bella Vista and Toluca. He left Schalke 04 in January 2008 and returned to Penarol.
International career

For the Uruguay, he was a participant at the 2002 World Cup and scored Uruguay's first goal of the tournament, a volley that curled into the top left corner of the goal. He worn the captain's armband for Uruguay. He also played at 2004 and 2007 Copa America.
