Karcher grew up in Montclair, New Jersey, where he graduated from Montclair High School as part of the class of 1983. After leaving his hometown and relocating to the Pattenburg section of Union Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Karcher created theAmphitheater.org, a web site for graduates of Montclair High School that has had thousands of hits daily from alumni located worldwide.

His first broadcasting job was at Radio BHN in Birmingham, England, where he hosted a pre-formatted Top 40 show called "American Heart Beat". After stints at WRTI in Philadelphia and WPRB in Princeton, New Jersey, Karcher has been the "full-time substitute host" at WBGO, where he has been part of the on-air team since 1997, a public radio station broadcasting from Newark, New Jersey that airs jazz and NPR programs. Formerly a commercial airline pilot, Karcher was a member of the team that created the social media campaign that created hype for the 1999 film The Blair Witch Project.

As a film producer / designer, Karcher has worked on the 2007 film The Air I Breathe, the 2008 film The Objective and the DVD release of Behind the Scenes at Family Guy. Karcher co-developed and appeared in Four Corners of Fear, a 2013 spoof of Blair Witch Project created by the original film's co-producer Eduardo Sanchez.
