Daniel G. Guttfreund, Ph. D, (born March 3, 1962) is a Salvadoran psychologist. Fluent in several languages and with a long successful career; has established as one of the leading experts in Clinical Psychology in El Salvador. In the present, he works in his own clinic located in Colonia San Benito and has recently innovated in Online Psychotherapy.

Biography

Born in a Jewish family on March 3, 1962 in El Salvador, Daniel Guttfreund is the youngest of five siblings and spent his early life in Jerusalem, Israel. There, he begins his studies in Sociology and Social Anthropology in Hebrew University of Jerusalem. When he finishes, he moves to California and continues his education in California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego where he obtains his doctorate in Clinic Psychology in the year of 1988.

The fifth child of Enrique and Gertrud Guttfreund, his father was a well known entrepreneur and ambassador for many years of El Salvador in Israel. He has 4 siblings: André, Noemi, Miriam and Ruth. His brother André won an Oscar Academy Award. His sister Ruth is an Art Therapist, Noemi a Psychotherapist, and Miriam is a world renowned landscape architect awarded the La-Gasse Medal in 2016 and was named by President Barack Obama to the National Commission of the Arts. Daniel is happily married to Lisa Guttfreund, with whom he has three daughters: Maya, Gabriela and Ilana.

Career

While living in Israel, Dr. Guttfreund developed a board game aimed at mental health professionals and families to use a fun and interactive game as a method of communication. The game is called Yad al Ha Lev and was sold to Orda Ltd. It has been selling well for over 20 years. While in El Salvador, Dr. Guttfreund developed a second game, called Diverti, its proceeds going to the "Tin Marín" children's museum. Dr. Guttfreund has also brought world renowned speakers to El Salvador, such as Dr. Edward Hallowell and Dr. Eric Storch.

In 1982 he was included in the dean list in Hebrew University and later on in 1989, he was selected by the students as one of the “Exceptional Speakers” during the Fall semester. In California during 1986, he was selected to be part of “Who’s who of American Colleges and Universities” and in 1988 he was recognized with honors for this doctorate thesis defense.

Daniel Guttfreund is one of the most renowned psychologists in El Salvador. Fluent in several languages such as Spanish, English, Hebrew and Portuguese. His long and successful career has established him as one of the leading experts in Clinical Psychology in that country. In the present, he works in his own clinic located in Colonia San Benito, San Salvador. He has recently innovated in Online Psychotheraphy in order to be able to help others around the globe.

He has worked closely with the Peace Corps and the United States Embassy in El Salvador as official mental health provider and is the proud founding president and member of the Board of Directors of the “Tin Marín" children's museum in El Salvador.

Dr. Guttfreund was a founding member of the first children's museum in El Salvador, the "Tin Marín" children's museum, which has operated for 17 years, receiving roughly 180,000 visitors a year, making it the most visited educational institution in El Salvador. Dr. Guttfreund still serves in the board of directors, and he focuses mainly on directing an educational axis around prevention and social impact of the museum exhibits. The Tin Marín museum has the first exhibit ever made in a children's museum on the topic of sexual abuse.

Dr. Guttfreund also served as President of the Association of the Barra de Santiago. He was very active helping two schools, two health units and promoting environmental issues at the Barra de Santiago beach.

He also created a post-graduate clinical training seminar for graduating students at FUNPRES, a private nonprofit foundation for the improvement of education in El Salvador. He also served as member of the board of directors of the American School, as chairman of the Education Committee.

1989 - 1992: Hebrew University - Counseling Center. Clinical position in Israel. Working with both short-term and long-term psychotherapy models in a variety of diagnostic Axis I and Axis II.

1987 - 1988: Alvarado Parkway Institute, La Mesa. Clinical practice in a psychiatric patient hospital. Two hospital shifts consisting of clinical work in the intensive care and chemical dependency unit.

1986 - 1987: Roads, Pacific Beach. Clinical practice. Experience with long-term individual psychotherapy. Working with the substance abuse patients and other Axis I and Axis II diagnoses.

1985 - 1986: Meeting of Young Escondido, Escondido. Clinical practice. Experience with individual, group, family psychotherapy and crisis intervention. Working with the population including: child abuse, battered women and juvenile delinquency.

1985: United Daughters, Escondido. Co-facilitator of a group of sexually abused children.

1985: Casa de Amparo, Oceanside. Counselor for children who were taken out of their home as a result of abuse.

1984: University of California, San Diego, Medical Hospital, Pediatrics, San Diego. Counselor for children undergoing medical treatment in the hospital premises.
