Born in Cork, Cahalane was raised in a strong Gaelic football family. His father, Niall Cahalane, and his uncle, John Cleary, both played with Cork and won four All-Ireland medals between them. His aunt, Nollaig Cleary, is a nine-time All-Ireland medal winner with Cork.
Cahalane first played competitive hurling and Gaelic football at Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh. Here he won a Cork Colleges Under-16½ B medal. Cahalane later lined out with University College Cork, winning an All-Ireland Freshers title in 2012.
As a dual player, Cahalane first appeared for the Castlehaven and St. Finbarr's club at juvenile and underage levels. He later won county senior football championship medals with the Castlehaven senior team in 2012 and 2013.
Cahalane was just sixteen when he was selected for the Cork minor football team. He played for two championship seasons with the minor team, becoming a dual player in 2010, however, he ended his minor career as an All-Ireland runner-up. Cahalane subsequently enjoyed a three-year stint with the Cork under-21 teams, however, he was an All-Ireland runner-up again in 2013. By this stage he had also joined the Cork senior hurling team after making his debut during the 2012 league. After two seasons with the Cork senior football team Cahalane has since committed himself solely to the hurling team. Since then he has won a Munster medal.
