The school was established as a merger of Madison-Mayodan and Stoneville high schools. Athletic programs of the two former schools (formerly the Falcons and Eagles, respectively) were merged in 1989, and the new facilities were opened in 1991.
McMichael High School is the home of the 2004, 2007 NCHSAA 2A Dual Team State Championship Wrestling teams, led by Coach Jon Bullins; the 1995 NCHSAA 2A Men's Tennis State Championship team, led by Coach Steve Spencer; and the 2009 NCHSAA 2A Baseball Championship team, led by Coach John Hall.
The school is named after Dalton L. McMichael (1914–2001), a textile executive in North Carolina.
Randy Quarles
A graduate of Appalachian State University, Randy Quarles took over the role of band director in 2009. He brought the band to a higher potential, leading the orchestral group to its first ever I rating, of exemplary, in the North Carolina Band Masters Association Music Performance Adjudication (MPA) in 2015 and 2016. The marching band has grown in tradition and success. "No freakin' way", "know your role", and "take a lap" are all memorable phrases of students. Quarles was awarded the Teacher of the Year Award for the 2015-2016 school year.
