Overview

Cytonn is a private equity firm, formed in 2014 and is based in Kenya, the largest economy in the East African Community. It is headed by a team of young professionals with local expertise and a wide network of overseas contacts. The firm has, during the first two years of existence, established a subsidiary in the United States (Cytonn Diaspora), to cater to Kenyans who live overseas. Among its other subsidiaries is Cytonn Cooperative Savings Society and Cytonn Real Estate Investments Limited, a subsidiary dedicated solely to investing in real estate. As at 31 December 2015, the firm's total assets were KES:6.5 billion (USD:65 million). In September 2016, the company applied to the Capital Markets Authority of Kenya to establish a subsidiary wholly and solely dedicated to wealth management.

History

In 2014, four senior managers at publicly listed British-American Investments Company (Britam), left the company to form their own private equity firm which they named Cytonn. The four are:

  1. Edwin Dande - Chief executive officer at Cytonn
  2. Patricia Wanjama - Chief legal officer at Cytonn
  3. Shiv Arora - Executive director at Cytonn
  4. Elizabeth Nkukuu - Chief investment officer at Cytonn

Investment structure

Cytonn's investments are organised into four main classes:

Private Equity

Cytonn focuses in the areas of (a) financial services (b) education & human resources and (c) information technology

Real Estate

Focusing in theareas of (i) real estate investments (ii) real estate backed fixed income notes and (iii) rent stabilised investments units

High Yield Fixed Income

Includes (A) short-term notes and (B) medium and long-term fixed income notes.

Cooperative Society

A wholly owned subsidiary, Cytonn Investment Co-operative Society Limited (Cytonn Coop).

Ownership

The company stock is owned by the four founders of the firm. In 2015, the founders sold 10 percent of the company stock to "high net-worth investors". The shareholding in the business is as depicted in the table below.
