Background

Gustavson was born in rural Minnesota to a jazz musician and a waitress in 1947. Growing up surrounded by music, the rhyme scheme and cadences in poetry appealed to familiar sensory surroundings.

Gustavson attended Gustavus Adolphus College, Boston University, Louisiana State University, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, and Oklahoma State University over the course of her academic career.

She taught at both the Northeastern State University and Louisiana State University graduate schools. Today, she continues to lecture around the country and is an international speaker on the use of writing in therapy. She has addressed the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine grand rounds in psychiatry.

She has been married for over forty years to Dr. Edward E. Gustavson, MD, a developmental pediatrician. Their son, Dr. Kent Gustavson, PhD, is the CEO and founder of the indie publishing house Blooming Twig Books.

Gustavson currently lives and works at her family therapy practice in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she serves as a board member of 4 national organizations: COT Education, ELCA, Nimrod International Journal, and The Lutheran Magazine.

Author

Cynthia Blomquist Gustavson is the author of the award-winning book Bully!: The Big Book About Bullies and the Bullied, for which her husband Dr. Edward E. Gustavson wrote the foreword.

Her book Between Tahlequah and Tulsa, a collection of poetry influenced by the music of Woody Guthrie and her time living in Minnesota and Oklahoma, was released in 2014.

She is a contributing author in The Speaker Anthology.

She has also recorded a music album with her son, Kent Gustavson, When Love is Real (with Kent Gustavson).

Therapist

Gustavson is an academic and advocate for social work. Besides writing, she has over thirty years of experience as a social worker and therapist.

Over the course of her long career as a social therapist, Cynthia has worked in a variety of fields, including drug prevention, individual and group therapy, and caregiving for the chronically ill and developmentally disabled. She is a contributor to the book "Expressive Therapies for Sexual Issues: A Social Work Perspective".
