Cumbum is a census town in Prakasam district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is the mandal headquarters of Cumbum mandal in Markapur revenue division. It is a taluk in kurnool district. before merging it with other taluks from kurnool , guntur and nellore districts to form prakasam district. Thus originally this town is a part of Rayalaseema.

Cumbum lake also known as Gundalakamma lake built on Gundalakamma rivulet upon Nallamalai hills is one of the oldest man made lakes of Asia. The anicut was built by the Vijayanagar princess Varadharaj Amma. The lake in its present form is about 7 km long and on average, about 3.5 km wide As per the Imperial gazette of India at the turn of the 20th century the height of the dam was 57 feet (17 m) and the drainage area was 430 square miles (1,100 km2). The direct irrigation land was about 10,300 acres (42 km2) in all. Cumbum lake is accessible both by the rail Guntur-Nandyal railway line and by road 108 km from Ongole.

Cumbum is located at 15.5669°N 79.1167°E / 15.5669; 79.1167. It has an average elevation of 184 metres (606 ft).

Transport

State highways Vinukonda–Nandyal and Kadapa roads, the Vijayawada–Guntakal railway line pass through the town.

Politics

The town was an assembly constituency until 2009 in Andhra Pradesh. Muthamulu Ashok Reddy won 2014 assembly elections when Cumbum constituency was reorganized and merged in Giddalur constituency.

Education

The primary and secondary school education is imparted by government, aided and private schools, under the School Education Department of the state. The medium of instruction followed by different schools are English, Telugu.
