History

The school is built on the site of Easthorpe Villa. Originally the home of the Hurst family, the house changed its name to Springfield in the 1940s and was subsequently demolished in the 1960s to make room for the Springfield Park private housing estate, Mirfield Showground and Crowlees Junior and Infant School.

In February 2007 a pupil at the school died in his home in a carbon monoxide incident that prompted a major advertising campaign.

Academic standards

The results of tests in 2002 showed that the school was in the top 5% in the country.

In the report of the March 2007 Ofsted inspection the school was assessed as 'Grade 1 - Outstanding'. Ofsted described the school as "This is an outstanding school. It has maintained high standards and continued to improve since its last inspection. ... The leadership and management, including governance, are first rate. ... The quality of teaching is outstanding and pupils achieve very well during their time at Crowlees. ... The curriculum is outstanding with particular strengths in the development of literacy and numeracy skills." Exceptionally, the school was also rated outstanding in every component part of the inspection.

Crowlees is a Healthy Schools Gold Award winner. They won, in July 2008, the inaugural Arthur Halliwell Memorial Award for Kirklees Sustainable Schools. In September 2008 the school secured the Eco-Schools Green Flag award.
