The book was written in the context of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and aimed to explain some of its rationale.
Trump pledged all proceeds of the book to charities.
Trump's campaign has spent approximately $55,055 on a bulk purchase of the book. A spokesperson for the Trump campaign said that they purchased the books "as part of gifting at the convention, which we have to do."
Contents
In the book, Trump sets out his position on illegal immigration, stating that the vast majority have come to improve their futures and the futures of their children. He also writes that despite his past affiliation to the Democratic Party, he has always held conservative values. Trump informs the reader that despite his previous support for single-payer health care, a position held mostly by liberals in America, he has changed his position because "It works incredibly well in Scotland, for example, and maybe it could have worked here at a different time. But not anymore."
Trump writes that he had opposed the Iraq War, seeing it as a potential destabilizing force, and sees military intervention as a last resort because "I've seen their broken bodies, know all about the horrors that live in their heads, and the enormous effects of trauma." On the subject of the loan of a million dollars given to him by his father to start his fortune, he says that a similar loan would likely have been given to him by a bank. Elsewhere, Trump reflects that his focus on his work was the cause of his two divorces.
Trump admits that he makes hyperbolic statements because "if you're not afraid to be outspoken, the media will write about you or beg you to come on their shows." He justifies this strategy by saying that he is a businessman and "When was the last time you saw a sign hanging outside a pizzeria claiming 'The Fourth Best Pizza In The World'?!"
Reception
John R. Coyne Jr. of The Washington Times wrote, "Some readers will want more specific approaches to issues."
Jeremy Diamond of CNN described the book as written in "Trump's trademark simple prose, peppered with tangents" as he criticizes Obama and the media.
