Murder

In 2012, Hungary had a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 population. There were a total of 132 murders in Hungary in 2012. The murder rate doubled in 2013 to 2.7 per 100,000. The country recorded 202 homicides in 2015 for a rate of 2.0 per 100,000.

General

In 2010, there were an average of 4,000 crimes against every 100,000 members of the population, of which at least 50% were considered serious crimes.

Corruption

Corruption is a severe issue in Hungary. According to Transparency International Hungary, almost one-third of top managers claim they regularly bribe politicians. Most people (42%) in Hungary think that the sector most affected by bribery is the political party system.

Bribery is common in the healthcare system in the form of gratitude payment–92% of all people think that some payment should be made to the head surgeon conducting a heart operation or an obestetrician for a child birth.

By location

Jozsef Hatala of the National Police (ORFK) stated in 2011 that the criminal underworld is strongest in Budapest and its surrounding counties. The murder rate is spread throughout Hungary. It is lower in the northeast county of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and the westernmost counties while it is highest in Pest County and Budapest.
