Student demographics

For the 2010–11 school year, Craven County Schools had a total population of 15,048 students and 957.89 teachers on a (FTE) basis. This produced a student-teacher ratio of 15.71:1. That same year, out of the student total, the gender ratio was 50% male to 50% female. The demographic group makeup was: White, 55%; Black, 30%; Hispanic, 8%; Asian/Pacific Islander, 3%; and American Indian, 1% (two or more races: 5%). For the same school year, 54.78% of the students received free and reduced-cost lunches.

Governance

The primary governing body of Craven County Schools follows a council–manager government format with a seven-member Board of Education appointing a Superintendent to run the day-to-day operations of the system. The school system currently resides in the North Carolina State Board of Education's Second District.

Board of Education

The seven members of the Board of Education generally meet on the third Thursday of each month. The current members of the board are: Carroll G. Ipock, II (Chair), Linda M. Thomas (Vice-Chair), Frances H. Boomer, David Hale, Beatrice Smith, Kim Smith, and Joseph L. Walton.

Superintendent

Lane Mills has been the superintendent of the system since February, 2012. He was previously an associate professor at East Carolina University, as well as an associate superintendent with the Wilson County Schools. Mills replaced the retiring Larry Moser.

Member schools

Craven County Schools has 25 schools ranging from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade. Those 25 schools are separated into five high schools, five middle schools, and 15 elementary schools.

    The Craven County Schools system has had one school listed as a Blue Ribbon School: Arthur W. Edwards Elementary School (2008). Also, one teacher in the school system has been recognized as a North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Teacher of the Year: Wendy Miller (2005–06).
