Corypha taliera

Corypha taliera is a species of palm, originally native Myanmar (Burma) and to the Bengal region of India and Bangladesh, but now very close to extinction. First discovered by British botanist William Roxburg. this species is red listed in IUCN.

There was one last known plant left of this almost extinct species, which was protected and had grown in the scrub jungle on the Dhaka University campus, Bangladesh. The plant was discovered in the 1950s growing in the scrub jungle on the Dhaka University campus, Bangladesh. It was then identified by local scientist Shamal Kumar Basu and subsequently protected in what became the enclosure of the residential quarters of the Pro Vice-Chancellor.[1]

On October 18, 2008, Daily Prothom Alo reported that the plant is about to bloom. According to botanists, the plant will die after it blooms. It flowered in 2010 and died in 2012.

On October 22, 2008, Daily Naya Diganta and Daily Jaijaidin reported that there are a few more plants still remaining at the Adward Park, Bogra, Bangladesh.

In January 2010, a 30-foot tree flowered.

On October 5, 2015, Daily Prothom Alo reported that about 300 plants were grown from the seed from the plant that bloomed in 2008 in Dhaka University. According to the news, tissue culture was not successful and gardener of Dhaka University Jahangir Alam sowed the seeds and became successful. Seedlings were distributed to other universities in Bangladesh, namely Dhaka University, Rajshahi University and Comilla University and to the department of forestry. Two plants in Dhaka University has now reached four feet height by the time the news was published.

Also one of this species was in India in the campus of Viswa Bharati. which was cut down by the local aboriginal because of their superstition when it bloomed in 1979. Goutam Roy, Head Master of Chandpara High School,Near Rampurhat, Who resides at Gangarampur, shows enthusiastic and able to get 5 plants from Dhaka University and plant them in Viswa Bharati Campus.
