Born in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Cooney first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Gort Community School. Here he won back-to-back Connacht medals, however, an All-Ireland medal remained elusive. Cooney first appeared for the St. Thomas' club at juvenile and underage levels, winning a county under-21 championship medal in 2013. With the St. Thomas' senior team he won an All-Ireland medal in 2013. He has also won two county senior championship medals.
Cooney made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he was selected for the Galway minor team. He enjoyed two championship seasons with the minor team and won an All-Ireland medal as a non-playing substitute in 2009. He subsequently joined the Galway under-21 team, winning an All-Ireland medal in that grade in 2011. Cooney made his senior debut during the 2012 Walsh Cup and quickly became a regular member of the starting fifteen. Since then he has won two Leinster medals and one National Hurling League medal.
On 3 September 2017, Cooney started for Galway as they won their first All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 29 years against Waterford.
