History

Formed in 1961 from the merger of Ahavai Shalom and Neveh Zedek Talmud Torah, the latter of which was also a merger of Neveh Zedek and Talmud Torah in 1902. All 4 temples were located in South Portland. Ahavai Shalom was founded in 1869, Talmud Torah was founded in 1883, and in 1900 Neveh Zedek was established. It is the second oldest Jewish congregation in the Pacific Northwest and the oldest Conservative congregation on the West Coast. Senator Robert F. Kennedy spoke there during his 1968 campaign for President.
