The constituency adjoining the Peak District in Cheshire has since its 1983 creation been a Conservative stronghold.
Boundaries
1983-1997: The Borough of Congleton, and the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich ward of Haslington.
1997–present: The Borough of Congleton.
NB: The borough of Congleton and its constituent wards were abolished on 1 April 2009, when they became part of the new unitary authority of Cheshire East.
The constituency covers the south-east of Cheshire, and includes the towns of Congleton, Alsager, Holmes Chapel, Middlewich and Sandbach.
History
The constituency was established at the 1983 general election, and was held comfortably until 2010 by the Conservative Ann Winterton, the wife of Sir Nicholas Winterton, the MP for the adjacent Macclesfield constituency. Both stood down at the 2010 general election; their joint statement cited the hectic life of politics as part of their reason for standing down.
